Modern Gray and Navy Boys Shared Bunkbed Room Reveal

DIYHomeLifestyleProducts

With the arrival of our newest addition, Brooks had to give up his crib and upgraded to a big boy bed in a shared room with Bennett. I was a little nervous about this transition, as Brooks was barely two when we went for it, so I wanted to make sure he had a fun and exciting new room to move into. I went with a gray and navy blue color scheme with saddle leather accents and love how it turned out. As a military family, we rent our current home, so it was important that anything we did was not permanent and could move with us in case that time comes. Details and sources for the room are below each picture. Can’t wait to hear what you think!

The boys’ beds were the major purchases for this room, and I love how they bring it together. We were super impressed with the quality at this price point, too. They’re very sturdy and have a 200 lb weight limit on the top bunk, which was important to us, because we knew our other kids would be climbing up there, too. This is the second set of bunk beds we have bought from the Better Homes and Gardens brand at Wal Mart and I have to say, they’ve both held up extremely well. We also splurged on the Beddy’s zippered bedding when they went on sale, and I am so glad we did! The boys can actually make their own beds, the quality is amazing (they are lined with minky and now I want it for my bed!), and it’s one less thing for me to put together every day. The banners above both boys’ beds are custom from The Honor Shop, who I discovered at Queen Bee Market, and they two Mama’s that run it are the sweetest ladies. Love supporting small shop makers!

Navy blue kids desk with art
We went with a console table as a desk for the boys so it didn’t clutter the room. All of the accents are from small shops and I love the personality they bring to the room. The California wood piece was made by 832 Woodworking, the framed night sky art is by Lindsay Letters Co, the banner is from, the wooden love hand is from Bald Jeremy Handmade, and the pencil holder is from Countryside Barn here in Poway. We picked up the dreamcatcher on our road trip to the National Parks last summer.

Reading nook in a shared boys room
I created a small reading nook with some of the boys’ favorite books and their personalized chairs they’ve both had since birth. The shelves were natural wood ones from Ikea that I painted blue and the leather crate was a lucky online find after searching for functional accessories in the saddle leather brown I love so much.

I knew we needed some functional toy storage the boys could easily get in and out of and these cubes fit the bill. I often find the boys playing with their trains and cars in this corner under the window and love that the toys can all be tucked away for easy clean up after. I also wanted to add some greenery to the room and found the hanging plant holder to bring a bit of masculinity in. I don’t have a link for the show-stopper sign because my dear friend Lisa made it for Bennett when he was born. She’s the best!

Looking back at the bed, you see two of my favorite pieces in the room and the splurge for the whole space–the 24″ round name signs from The Trendy Timber. We had Brooks’s already but ordered Bennett’s to complete the space. The nightstand is actually a basket from Magnolia flipped upside down, but that was perfect for that space and works well. I grabbed the lights at Home Depot and as much as I would love to hard wire them, that isn’t an option in our rental home. On top of the nightstand we have a kids echo dot and a Hatch Rest+. Those are two staples in our kid’s rooms for nighttime and I love that I can control both from my phone!

Our rental house has large sliding wooden doors over the closets, so we decided to remove those and put the boys’ dresses in the closet to maximize play space in the room. This has helped make the boys’ clothes more accessible to them, as well.
The boys are loving their new room and we love watching them play and grow their relationship as brothers in their new shared space!
